KUCHING will sign a ‘friendly city agreement’ with Nusantara to work closely together on socio-economic sectors in view of the increased tourism expected in future.

Kuching City South Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said Sarawak was already laying plans for major highway links to Nusantara and had also submitted plans for a super highway.

The proposal is to build a super-highway along the 1,000 kms long Sarawak-Kalimantan border plus a 500 km link road to connect that border superhighway to the Pan Borneo Highway.

That project is expected to cost RM 38 billion and is being proposed to be spent over the 13th Malaysia Plan, which means the border superhighway and its link to the Pan Borneo Highway may take at least five years to be constructed.

Wee was speaking to the media after a working visit to the Indonesian new capital of Nusantara in neighbouring Kalimantan.

“It was a very interesting visit and we found that Nusantara is already using artificial intelligence (AI) to plan its government infrastructures and public facilities.

"Nusantara is fast becoming a smart city in every aspect and the buildings there are being designed using AI technology.

"They are also environmentally friendly and the use of sophisticated technology is also seen in the public transportation and telecommunication systems being put in place throughout Nusantara,” he said.

He said Kuching can learn from the way Nusantara is being developed. - November 14, 2024
