THE huge carcass of a 10-metre-long Baleen whale found stuck below the Triso Bridge in the Sebuyau district in southern Sarawak is being retrieved for analysis and its bones to be salvaged for museum preservation.

The Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) and the Sarawak Museum Department are trying to salvage the bones of this huge whale found by Sebuyau fishermen yesterday.

The body of the whale is stuck below the foundation of the bridge and is in a state of decomposition, said the SFC in a press statement.

The body measures an estimated 10 metres in length and the tail span is about 2.8 metres wide, the SFC said.

The whale is of the Baleen species and the carcass is believed to have been washed under the bridge during high tide.

Fishermen in the area had reportedly seen the carcass floating near an island called Pulau Seduku which is a short distance offshore Sarawak in the South China Sea.

Sarawak's coastal waters have been found to be full of marine life, including dolphins and whales.

The seas surrounding Borneo Island are part of the main migratory route for these marine creatures in their annual voyages across the oceans around the globe. - November 23, 2024
