SARAWAK DAP has claimed that it was the party that fought for state labour laws to be amended and passed in Parliament while state ruling government Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) had been unsupportive.
Sarawak DAP Youth Secretary George Lam today claimed that GPS was the stumbling block that had denied workers in Sarawak equal rights and benefits on par with workers in the rest of the country.
"Sarawak DAP was the one that had fought for the long outdated Sarawak Labour Ordinance to be amended.
"It was Sarawak DAP that finally got the amendment Bill drafted and approved by the Federal Human Resources Ministry.
"Sarawak DAP successfully got it to be tabled in the Dewan Rakyat, and shortly after that the federal Human Resources Minister Steven Sim announced the passing of the amended Bill.
"The GPS had refused to amend the state labour laws for decades. They had failed to recognise the rights of the workers from the ordinary rakyat in this state,” he said.
He said this latest issue reflects the need for Sarawakians to vote in a bigger Opposition into the State Legislative Assembly in the coming state election," he said.
Sarawak labour laws were amended following the Dec 12 passing of the Sarawak Labour Ordinance Amendment Bill in the Dewan Rakyat.
The 1.46 million workers in this state will now enjoy equal rights with workers throughout the rest of Malaysia, announced Federal Minister for Human Resources Steven Sim. - December 14, 2024
