PROTESTORS clashed outside Menara Kinabalu as students marched against corruption and government backers held a counter-demonstration, prompting heavy traffic and riot police deployment.
Over 100 Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) students from Gempur Rasuah defied police instructions, marching 4.1km while chanting slogans against a state leader allegedly involved in graft.
Student leader Fadhli Kasim slammed the heavy police presence: "It’s our right to hold peaceful gatherings. We just want a clean government."
Meanwhile, Bangkit Sabahan, backing Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, was barred from entering the Menara Kinabalu compound, gathering 300 metres away instead. They accused the students of being politically influenced and urged them to "go back and study."
The rallies caused significant traffic disruptions around the area as riot police were deployed to maintain public order.
Gempur Rasuah vowed to remain outside the Chief Minister’s office until 1 am, while Bangkit Sabahan dispersed after an hour.
The protests follow viral videos allegedly showing state leaders negotiating mining deals, sparking calls for resignations and investigations. - December 31, 2024
