UMNO Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh called on the police to take action against those involved in the assault of a man, believed to be disabled, after a motorcycle accident at a farmers' market in Chukai on Friday.

"It is heartbreaking to see the victim being treated so cruelly. How could they kick him in the face and drag him along the road?

"Don't they have any humanity? Couldn't they see that he is an intellectually disabled person? Even if he wasn't, why resort to such violence? Akmal said in a video shared on Facebook yesterday.

Akmal also pledged free legal aid to the victim and vowed to pursue justice for him.

In the incident, the victim was said to have earlier crashed into a stall while riding his motorcycle at about 9.30 am, causing goods from a vendor's stall to spill. The victim was then beaten by several men, resulting in injuries.

Three men were detained on the same day of the incident, while a fourth was nabbed on Saturday night.

Bersatu Youth chief Aziman Hadi Nazri also criticised the act as inhumane and a violation of religious values and legal principles.

He said the victim, who is recognised as having a mental disability, should have been protected instead of being subjected to violence.

"We call on the authorities to conduct a transparent investigation and take stern action against those involved under Section 147 of the Penal Code (for rioting)," he said in a statement. - January 20, 2025
