Over 200 protesters breached barricades outside the Sogo shopping mall in Kuala Lumpur, for the anti-graft rally at 2.30 pm today.

Participants clad in black began making their way to Dataran Merdeka at 2 pm while chanting slogans such as “Tolak, tolak, lawan rasuah” and “Bangkit, bangkit mahasiswa”.

The “Himpunan Rakyat Benci Rasuah” rally was planned to start in front of the shopping mall before making its way to Dataran Merdeka later today.

A visible police presence was on-site to facilitate the rally and manage traffic flow.

Earlier, it was reported that Kuala Lumpur City Hall had sealed off the front entrance of the Sogo shopping complex using metal barriers and caution tape.

A notice was posted in the area, prohibiting the public from gathering, sitting, or engaging in activities there.

The aim of the protest is to highlight alleged corruption in the country, aiming to bring the issue to the forefront — especially among the youth.

The organisers have three main demands which are separation of the Attorney-General’s Chambers from the Prime Minister’s Office, ensuring that the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is free from political interference and the introduction of a Political Funding Act. - January 25, 2025
