THE cabinet meeting tomorrow will discuss the controversial guidelines on Muslims attending non-Muslim events, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

“We will discuss that in the Cabinet tomorrow,” he told reporters briefly after an event at the national audit department today.

He said this when asked about the proposal requiring non-Muslims to seek approval from the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) before hosting events that Muslims may attend

This was announced by Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Senator Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar.

He also said organisers would need to obtain the permission of the relevant authorities, as well as the “views” of Islamic authorities, if their event were to involve Muslims.

Na'im’s announcement has been met with criticism, including from Bangi MP Syahredzan Johan who argued that it could make things difficult for Muslim MPs.

Others, including religious groups said that such rulings could exacerbate religious divisions in the country.- February 6, 2025
