IN a significant step to enhance bilateral relations, the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) and the Ministry of Commerce of the Republic of Turkey have formalised a strategic partnership through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on February 11, 2025.
This agreement is primarily focused on enhancing cooperation in the areas of consumer protection, market surveillance, and inspection.
The MoU builds upon prior discussions and exploratory efforts that took place during KPDN’s Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali’s working visit to Turkiye in September 2024, which laid the groundwork for a robust partnership.
Through this MoU, both Malaysia and Turkey are set to gain from increased collaboration on a range of initiatives aimed at improving market regulation.
Among the key objectives are advancing product safety standards, exploring digitalisation strategies, and utilising data collection and analytics for more effective consumer reporting and pricing transparency.
This will also include mechanisms for managing consumer complaints and monitoring the prices of goods and services, ensuring fair and efficient market practices.
To ensure the success of these initiatives, the MoU stipulates the formation of a joint committee tasked with overseeing the implementation of the agreed-upon measures.
This committee will be responsible for driving the cooperation forward, ensuring that both nations meet their mutual objectives effectively.
The establishment of this committee and the formalisation of this partnership will not only benefit the two countries through shared expertise and best practices but will also provide new opportunities for advancing policies that can improve both domestic and international trade practices.
The exchange of knowledge and experience between Malaysia and Turkey is expected to contribute significantly to the enhancement of consumer protection, regulatory efficiency, and market monitoring.
Armizan expressed confidence that this collaboration would bring tangible improvements to both countries' consumer protection frameworks, creating a positive environment for trade, fair pricing, and the well-being of consumers.
The MoU serves as a testament to the growing relationship between Malaysia and Turkey, one built on mutual respect, shared interests, and a commitment to continued cooperation.
The signing ceremony, held as part of the official visit of the President of the Republic of Turkey, H.E. Recep Tayyip Erdogan, to Malaysia, marks a new chapter in the cooperation between the two nations.
The MoU was signed by Malaysia's Minister of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living, Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali, alongside the Minister of Commerce of the Republic of Turkiye, Prof. Dr. Omer Bolat.
