IT is shocking that Malay radio station ERA FM would upload a video mocking Hindu traditions.
The video, which shows a staff member mimicking the Hindu Kavadi dance and chanting "Vel, Vel" in a derogatory manner, has sparked outrage, particularly from MIC Deputy President Datuk Seri M. Saravanan, who has demanded an apology.
Saravanan has condemned the recent actions of ERA FM staff for disrespecting the Hindu religion.
The incident, which involved a video showing an individual mocking the kavadi dance and chanting "Vel Vel" inappropriately, was described by Saravanan as a direct insult to the Hindu faith and cultural traditions in Malaysia.

In a statement today, Saravanan said such behavior not only reflects a lack of understanding of religious sensitivities but also threatens the harmony of Malaysia’s multi-ethnic and multi-religious society.
He called on the government to take swift and firm action against ERA FM, including a public apology and proper disciplinary measures for those responsible.
In an industry known for its strict content guidelines, the clip, shared on the station's social media, has drawn widespread criticism online as well, with many questioning the lack of oversight and standard operating procedures for such content.
Some netizens have pointed fingers at comedian and presenter Azad @ Jazmin John Louis Jefri (a.k.a. Pak Azad), accusing him of displaying poor judgment and disrespecting Hindu beliefs.
Others expressed concern that this incident could lead to negative stereotypes about Malay Muslims as a whole.
Most of the netizens who commented agree that in a society that values respect and harmony, many argue that such offensive content has no place in the media, especially when the 3R (race, religion, and royalty) issues are so sensitive in Malaysia.
“Respect for all religions is vital to maintaining peace in the country's multi-cultural landscape,” a netizen said.
Another example was posted on TikTok by @muttoncurry who could not hide his disgust at this blatant disrespect who asked if there were no SOPs (standard operating procedures) in place when uploading videos.
“As a mainstream media organisation, it should have been clear on what is permissible and what is deemed insensitive.”
Many netizens lay the blame at the door of comedian and presenter Azad @ Jazmin John Louis Jefri (a.k.a. Pak Azad) for this serious lack of judgement in mocking Hindus.
According to them, his joke has gone against the teachings of Islam where other religions are to be respected.
Many netizens also lamented at how all Malay Muslims would be tarred with the same brush because of the insensitive actions of the few brainless individuals.
As many netizens have pointed out, respect and tolerance are essential in maintaining peace and harmony. Such infantile mocking of other religions has no place in a multi-cultural society, a netizen said.

When contacted, Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said he has received complaints from various parties regarding the actions of staff from an Astro-owned radio station who were seen mocking the religious ceremonies of other faiths, and the video was uploaded on social media earlier this morning.
“I have instructed MCMC (Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission) to conduct a thorough investigation, including summoning Astro and the management of the radio station to the MCMC headquarters to provide a full explanation,” he said today, adding, this is to ensure that appropriate actions can be taken based on existing rules and regulations. – March 4, 2025
