A 28-YEAR-OLD information technology (IT) officer lost RM20,000 after falling victim to a scammer who advertised SPayLater cash withdrawal services on TikTok.

Brickfields district police chief Assistant Commissioner Hoo Chang Hook said the incident occurred on Sept 1 when the woman was in Bangsar South and came across the advertisement on the social media platform.

He said the victim, who was interested in the purported service, contacted an agent through the telephone number provided in the advertisement.

“The victim was instructed to transfer money via QR codes provided by the agent to three different accounts.

“The victim made nine transactions totalling RM20,000,” he said in a recent statement.

Hoo said the agent subsequently demanded an additional payment, allegedly to facilitate the return of the money to the victim’s personal bank account.

“However, the victim did not make the additional payment after becoming suspicious before going to the police station yesterday to lodge a report,” he said.

He said the case was being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. - September 4, 2026
