THE Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has taken statements from 36 people as part of investigations into the corruption and money laundering case involving Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.
Sources indicate that they have already questioned 32 witnesses and four former aides of Ismail Sabri, who were previously detained, as of yesterday. Additionally, 23 new witnesses are set to be called soon for their statements.
MACC has also frozen 13 bank accounts containing RM9.33 million as part of its investigation into the former prime minister
It was reported that four more witnesses are currently in the process of providing their statements.
Regarding the bank documents, sources mentioned that the application has been submitted to the relevant agency, which is now preparing to send it to the MACC.
Last Friday, MACC investigators spoke with a ‘Datuk’ doctor at a Petaling Jaya hospital who treated Ismail Sabri to assess the health status of the Bera MP. Ismail Sabri was expected to give his statement to the MACC last Friday but missed the appointment due to health issues.
MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said that the recording of Ismail Sabri’s statement has been rescheduled for this Wednesday.
On February 10, Ismail Sabri submitted his asset declaration details before his statement was recorded on February 19.
The case is being investigated under the MACC Act 2009 and the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001 (AMLATFPUAA).
According to reports, the MACC seized approximately RM170 million in cash in various international currencies, including Baht, Riyal, Pound Sterling, Won, Euro, Swiss Franc and Yuan, as well as 16 kilograms of gold bullion worth an estimated RM7 million.
Meanwhile, the doctor treating Ismail Sabri was unable to confirm if the former prime minister will be fit to meet MACC investigators this week. – March 11, 2025
