PRIME MINISTER Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has officially launched the Wakaf Mara Madani, an initiative designed to support the Malay community, with both himself and Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi each committing to a personal donation of RM1,000.

During his speech at the launch, which coincided with the 59th Mara Day celebrations on Saturday, Anwar highlighted the significance of the wakaf institution is part of the Muslim legacy, aimed at building strength and support from the grassroots level.

“The wakaf is a part of our tradition, a legacy that has always focused on empowering the community from the ground up. This initiative does not mean we will reduce government funding for similar efforts,” Anwar explained.

He added: “This is a personal pledge from Zahid and myself. We will not reduce our commitment. Both Zahid and I have agreed to each contribute RM1,000 to the Wakaf Mara Madani."

A wakaf is a voluntary charitable contribution in Islam, used to support individuals and organisations in need.

Anwar encouraged those present to contribute generously to the initiative, stressing the importance of collective support.

According to a statement from Mara, the primary aim of establishing the Wakaf Mara Madani is to act as a catalyst for creating a Bumiputera society with enhanced socio-economic well-being, utilising sustainable wakaf instruments to achieve this goal. – March 15, 2025
