AMID his ongoing 1MDB trial, former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak today obtained permission from the High Court to pay his last respects to Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi at Masjid Negara.
Najib’s lead defence lawyer Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah informed the High Court that his client has been allowed to pay his last respects to Abdullah, fondly known as Pak Lah.
“My client also made an application this morning to the Prisons and asked the period between 11am to 12.30pm to pay last respects and come back,” he said.
The court adjourned the trial at around 9.50am to allow Najib to make his way to the National Mosque, where Abdullah’s remains are lying in state.
Earlier in a post, Najib described Pak Lah as a brother and close friend who was always there in times of hardship and joy.
"His sincerity and willingness to guide, advise, and show the way are things that have never faded from the memories of those who have worked with him.
"Pak Lah is a respected friend, mentor, and leader and personally, he was very close to our family.
"He was like a brother and a close friend during both difficult and happy times," he said.
The public can pay their last respects to Pak Lah in Masjid Negara from 10am to 1pm.
The coffin carrying the late former prime minister wrapped in Jalur Gemilang was laid in the prayer hall from 9.30am after he was bathed and shrouded. - April 15, 2025
