PENANG has completed all 23 scheduled water infrastructure projects, including the vital pipe connection for the Sungai Perai River Crossing Pipeline (SP-RCP), with works officially concluded at 1.48pm today.
The upgrades, which began at 10pm on Friday, are part of a RM25 million initiative to enhance water supply for 465,000 users across the state.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said water supply would now be gradually restored to affected areas.
“Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) teams are currently conducting system tests and pipe air-release processes before treated water from Sungai Dua Water Treatment Plant can be fully distributed to users,” he said.
“We hope to achieve 88 per cent recovery rate, especially in Seberang Perai Selatan (SPS), and parts of Northeast and Southwest districts by tonight, with 100 per cent supply restoration by 10am tomorrow (Monday),” Bernama reported him saying.
Chow made the announcement during a site inspection at Kampung Teluk, accompanied by PBAPP chief executive officer Datuk K. Pathmanathan.
He noted that the SP-RCP project, which involved connecting two 1.35-metre diameter pipes, had faced some minor delays due to weather conditions.
“The contractor faced challenges as the works were located right by Sungai Prai, and the high tide phenomenon over the past two days complicated operations. However, works were finally completed this afternoon despite delays,” he said.
Chow encouraged those with restored supply to use water prudently, while urging continued patience from consumers still waiting for reconnection.
As of 11.30am today, PBAPP confirmed that water had been restored to 162,000 accounts affected by the Scheduled Water Supply Interruption (SWSI).
Recovery rates by district stood at 100 per cent for Seberang Perai Utara, 88 per cent for Seberang Perai Tengah, 84 per cent in the Northeast district, 38 per cent in SPS, and 10 per cent in the Southwest district.
The SWSI, in effect from 10pm Friday until Monday morning, impacted 341,708 accounts across five districts to facilitate the comprehensive upgrade programme. - April 27, 2025
