THE government’s implementation of the Medicine Price Display Order has been welcomed by the Malaysian Pharmacists Society (MPS), which says the policy will enhance transparency in the healthcare sector and help consumers make better-informed decisions.

MPS president Professor Amrahi Buang said the initiative reflects the MADANI government’s commitment to public welfare and the right of individuals to access clear information about the cost of medicines.

“MPS views this policy as part of the MADANI Government’s initiative to educate and empower consumers, particularly regarding their right to know medicine prices and to choose where to obtain their medications, whether from clinics or pharmacies,” Bernama reported him saying.

“This is a very positive step as it empowers consumers to make smarter, more affordable choices, which will ultimately benefit society as a whole. Also, this policy will help raise public awareness and improve health literacy related to medication pricing.”

While noting that many pharmacy chains already display prices for commonly used medications in line with the new order, Amrahi acknowledged that smaller independent pharmacies might initially face some challenges in complying with the regulation.

“However, with clear briefings through engagement sessions and a comprehensive FAQ document, the implementation of this order can proceed smoothly,” he said.

To support the rollout, MPS organised a town hall session on 27 April for private pharmacies to seek clarification from the Ministry of Health.

Amrahi emphasised that pharmacies have a responsibility to uphold patients' rights and remain responsive to their needs.

“As service providers, community pharmacies must understand and meet the needs and rights of patients. Doing so is consistent with the Code of Ethics for Pharmacists 2018, where the well-being of patients and consumers is paramount,” he said.

He also welcomed the government’s decision to introduce a three-month grace period before full enforcement, saying it would allow small-scale pharmacies time to adapt and align their operations with the new requirements.

“MPS will also run a countdown via our communication channels to remind members of the order’s enforcement timeline,” he added. - May 6, 2025
