PAS has conceded that an apology alone is insufficient to address the recent gaffe involving the national flag, the Jalur Gemilang, and that concrete action is necessary to avoid normalising such mistakes.
In a statement issued on Friday, party secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan emphasised that the party fully supports internal actions by the individuals involved and agrees with the authorities taking a firm stance to ensure that such errors are not repeated.
“The party welcomes internal action by affected parties and supports the action taken by the authorities in a fair and firm manner to ensure no repetition of negligence and error,” Takiyuddin said.
PAS found itself in controversy after Terengganu PAS depicted a Jalur Gemilang with an 11-pointed yellow star and 12 red-and-white stripes, instead of the correct 14-pointed star and 14 stripes, which symbolise the 13 states in Malaysia plus the federal territories.
Takiyuddin reiterated that the party shares the sentiments expressed by various parties calling for an investigation and strict action against anyone who disrespects the national flag.
“This is because of the frequency of such incidents lately not only involving individuals but also media organisations, political bodies including ministries themselves,” he said.
