FRU Tragedy: Lorry driver remains in custody as bail goes unpaid
Police confirms that no party has come forward to pay the RM6,000 bail set by the Teluk Intan Magistrate’s Court, accused to be detained till 17 June - May 17, 2025

THE lorry driver charged with dangerous driving that led to the deaths of nine Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) personnel remains in custody after failing to post bail, according to police.

Perak deputy police chief DCP Zulkafli Sariaat confirmed that no party has come forward to pay the RM6,000 bail set by the Teluk Intan Magistrate’s Court, which means the accused, Rudi Zulkarnain Md Radi, 45, will remain held at the Batu Gajah lock-up until the next court mention on 17 June.

“Bail for the lorry driver was set at RM6,000, and he has been unable to pay. We have also not received any payment from others so far,” he told reporters during a visit to Hospital Teluk Intan (HTI) today.

The Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Shah, visited the hospital earlier to offer support to FRU personnel receiving treatment following last Tuesday’s fatal accident.

Rudi Zulkarnain had pleaded not guilty to the charge of dangerous driving, leading the court to grant bail, though media reports have since indicated that some members of the public have expressed interest in covering the amount.

DCP Zulkafli also noted that police are still hoping for a key eyewitness to come forward.

“A witness who claimed to have seen the lorry driver attempting to avoid another vehicle at the crash site has yet to come forward to assist in the investigation,” he said. “If anyone comes forward, police will follow up with further investigation for trial purposes.” -May 17, 2025

To date, statements have been recorded from 16 witnesses. - May 17, 2025
