AS the 46th ASEAN Summit approaches, Malaysians are voicing strong hopes that the regional meeting will place climate change, the digital divide and food security high on its agenda, along with efforts to boost economic prospects and cooperation.
Bernama cited Noor Eszereen Juferi, 44, an officer at Universiti Putra Malaysia’s Corporate Strategy and Relations Centre, saying the themes of inclusivity and sustainability are aligned with ASEAN’s goals for a more united and resilient region.
“Climate change and the digital divide, particularly affecting rural communities, remain ongoing challenges. I hope Malaysia will take a wise and proactive role in enhancing regional cooperation on food security, addressing the climate crisis and driving digital empowerment,” she told Bernama.
She added that the summit should also spotlight economic and employment opportunities for the region’s youth through strategic initiatives in education, tourism and talent development.
Echoing this sentiment, Angel Ng, 42, said ASEAN could harness its abundant resources and rich cultural diversity to drive tourism and economic benefits across member states.
“This could be achieved through the spirit of ASEAN solidarity, where member countries support one another in overcoming challenges,” said the civil servant. “Together, we can build a stronger, greener, and more united ASEAN.”
Roznah Abdul Jabbar, 44, highlighted the need to narrow the development gaps between ASEAN countries across various sectors to ensure shared prosperity, growth and security.
“As a Malaysian, I hope to see more business and investment opportunities emerging from a wider consumer market and a more diverse economy, along with greater travel prospects, not only for leisure but also for career and employment opportunities,” she told Bernama.
She stressed that strengthened political stability, increased trade and enhanced regional tourism would continue to underpin ASEAN’s economic success.
Lacey Elizabeth Stanely, 44, a Senior Fire Officer, said member countries must work closely to improve education, economic mobility and stability, all while advancing long-term development.
“I hope to see ASEAN this year and beyond as a region with a stronger spirit of regional unity and integration, resilient and inclusive economic growth, digital transformation and innovation, sustainable development and comprehensive climate action,” she said.
Stanely also underscored the importance of enhancing regional health cooperation, pandemic preparedness and ensuring that ASEAN remains people-centred so that communities across all levels may benefit from integration.
The 46th ASEAN Summit begins with the Senior Officials Meeting (SOM) on 23 May, followed by the ministerial gathering on 25 May. The Heads of Government Meeting is set for 26 May.
This year’s summit theme, 'Inclusivity and Sustainability', reflects ASEAN’s commitment to a central, cooperative role in the global and regional landscape, with Malaysia playing a leading role in pushing forward shared principles of unity and sustainable progress. - May 21, 2025
