PKR has not yet discussed the resignation of Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz with its unity government partner, Umno.

Its president and Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, said the party respects Tengku Zafrul's decision and will consult Umno on the next steps.

However, he said Tengku Zafrul’s position as the minister for investment, trade and industry will not be affected.

“Tengku Zafrul carried out his task as minister very well. Investments are in the hundreds of billions, and he led his ministry well.

"As for his decision to apply (to join PKR), we have not reached that stage yet. Let him complete his Haj first, and there is no need for unhealthy interpretation regarding his resignation,” he said.

Anwar also denied that there would be a Cabinet reshuffle.

“Two ministers have resigned and we need to give them time to reflect on what they want to do. They are on leave now, and I have already approved their leave. I don’t think we should pre-empt.

“The government is functioning as usual,” he said.

On Friday, Tengku Zafrul announced his resignation from all posts in Umno, along with his membership in the party and also expressed his intention to join PKR.

He reiterated that his decision to leave Umno was not easy, but was made after careful consideration of various factors. – June 1, 2025
