THE MINISTRY of Education in a circular on May 30 issues guidelines for teachers on proper dress codes and use of social media.
In the circular signed by Education deputy director-general of school operations, Zainal Abas, the ministry said teachers must use decent, neat, appropriate clothing which reflects moral values, work ethics and the professional integrity of their profession.
"Teachers must always maintain a high level of professionalism in carrying out their duties both as a teacher and civil servant," read the circular.
It stated that teachers are not allowed to wear clothing that are tight, revealing or 'figure-hugging'.
On the use of social media, the circular stated that teachers must use it responsibly and professionally.
"Teachers cannot post photographs or videos that are deemed as indecent, create negative perspectives and could be damaging to one's self-image, education institution, district education offices, state education department and the ministry
"Teachers are also prohibited from circulating content that is provocative, fake, sensitive, 3R matters (royalty, religion and race) and political in nature.
"They are also not allowed to share any internal matters related to their respective organisations which could create tension,".
The school management and relevant departments were also told to ensure proper compliance with these rules.
"They are also encouraged to remind teachers to uphold integrity and proper conduct at work, in public and online, to preserve the credibility and dignity of the profession," added the circular.
The circular was also copied to the directors of the private education and special education divisions, along with all other divisions.
The directive follows two viral incidents recently - a video clip which showed a student crying while being scolded by a teacher in a school canteen, and another where a student is seen telling off his teacher that he attended school merely see his girlfriend and not to study. - June 2, 2025
