A GROUP of seven men who went leisure fishing in the South China Sea off Tanjung Po in southern Sarawak were saved after their boat capsized.

They were rescued by the crew of MTT Rajang, a merchant ship, which was near the site of the incident about 10 nautical miles off the coast.

The boat was reported to have capsized around 4.45pm and the anglers rescued and safely brought ashore around 7.30pm last night

Sarawak Maritime Department director Mohd Khairi Abdul Aziz today said all the seven were found safe. “The Maritime Rescue Sub Centre in Kuching received the initial report at 4.45pm about the boat that had capsized.

"All seven were successfully rescued by the crew of merchant ship MTT Rajang. The MTT Rajang happened to be passing the site at the time of the incident.

"The Maritime Enforcement Agency was also alerted. All seven were safely taken ashore to the maritime complex in Kuching about 7pm," he said in a statement.

An initial report showed that the boat capsized after it suffered a leak and was hit by strong waves.

Khairi reminded those going to sea to exercise caution and to make sure their vessels are safe and that they are equipped with all safety gears. - June 15, 2025
