THE recent wave of UMNO branch-level conferences reflects a renewed sense of vigour and mobilisation among party grassroots, signalling a strengthening of the party’s organisational foundations, according to UMNO Secretary-General Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki.
Speaking during an episode of Berita Harian’s recent ‘Borak Harini’ podcast, Asyraf said a total of 20,710 UMNO branches had successfully held their annual meetings—up from 20,005 previously—a development he described as encouraging for the party’s future.
“This growth not only demonstrates an expansion in the party’s grassroots structure but also reflects the unwavering spirit and commitment of members in realigning UMNO’s direction and struggle,” he said.
The branch conferences, which ran from 6 April to 25 May, saw robust participation from party members, with Asyraf describing the attendance as “extraordinary”.
“I have closely followed the proceedings and found that the level of engagement was highly encouraging. It shows a positive wave of resurgence at the grassroots level,” he said.
According to Asyraf, one of the main issues raised during the meetings was preparation for the next general election, alongside calls to reinforce the party’s founding objectives.
“There is a clear sentiment among members that UMNO must remain firmly rooted in its original mission—championing the people’s welfare, upholding Islam, and safeguarding the position of Malays and Bumiputeras,” he said.
While acknowledging that some members expressed concern over the party’s partnership within the Unity Government alongside Pakatan Harapan (PH), Asyraf said most grassroots members were more focused on the bigger picture.
“Many recognised that the key is to ensure UMNO’s core struggle is never diluted or compromised,” he added.
He expressed confidence that the energy demonstrated by grassroots members would inject new life into the party as it adapts to Malaysia’s evolving political landscape.
“As long as UMNO remains anchored in its noble struggle and does not waver on its founding principles, I believe the party will continue to stay relevant and trusted,” he said. - June 16, 2025
