THE two recent shootings in the Kuala Lumput, which occurred within four days of each other, are believed to involve elements of organised crime, according to Kuala Lumpur police.

Deputy Police Chief Datuk Mohamed Usuf Jan Mohamad said preliminary investigations suggest the incidents in Brickfields and Cheras may be linked to gangland activity. However, it remains unclear whether the suspects had been hired to carry out the attacks.

“Investigations are ongoing, and efforts to track down all the suspects are actively underway,” he said on Thursday.

Despite public concern, the Royal Malaysia Police have given assurances that the security situation in the capital remains under control.

Speaking to the media on Wednesday, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain stated that both shooting incidents appeared to be targeted and stemmed from personal disputes.

“There is no cause for alarm among the public regarding safety and public order,” he said.

Initial reports indicate that both incidents are believed to have originated from disputes outside the Kuala Lumpur jurisdiction and subsequently spilled into the city.

Kuala Lumpur Police Chief Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa explained that the shooting in Cheras, which occurred just after midnight on Monday in front of a shopping complex along Jalan Loke Yew, is thought to be linked to smuggling activities in Sibu, Sarawak.

The earlier shooting, which took place in Brickfields the previous Friday, is believed to be connected to criminal conflicts originating in Selangor.

Both cases remain under active investigation as police continue efforts to identify and apprehend those responsible. - June 19, 2021
