A MASKED man armed with a machete hurled chilli powder at employees before smashing a display case and fleeing with jewellery worth approximately RM50,000 during a daring robbery at a gold shop on Jalan Pandak Mayah 5, Kuah, on Wednesday morning.
Langkawi District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Shariman Ashari, said the 45-year-old suspect acted alone during the 11.48am incident.
“At the time, the 69-year-old shop owner and a 60-year-old woman were present inside the premises,” he said in a statement.
“The suspect attempted to escape but was pursued by the shop owner and members of the public nearby. He was ultimately apprehended by police officers who were patrolling the area.”
The case is being investigated under Sections 392 and 397 of the Penal Code for armed robbery, an offence that carries a sentence of up to 14 years' imprisonment and whipping upon conviction.
