A 40-YEAR-old account executive has lost RM139,565 after falling prey to a phone scam syndicate masquerading as police officers and insurance agents.

According to Muar deputy police chief Superintendent Muhammad Aidil Roneh Abdullah, the victim initially received a call in January from an individual claiming to represent an insurance company, alleging her involvement in a fraudulent claim.

“The call was then transferred to another individual posing as a police officer from the Dang Wangi District Police Headquarters, who claimed the victim was linked to 21 police reports involving a non-existent investment scheme and that an arrest warrant had been issued,” he said in a statement issued today.

The scammers instructed the woman to open a bank account for so-called investigative purposes and to deposit funds into it to resolve the fabricated charges.

Convinced by the deception, she provided her bank card details and conducted 30 transactions between 31 January and 17 June.

“The victim realised she had been scammed after all the phone numbers that had contacted her became unreachable. She lodged a police report yesterday,” added Muhammad Aidil.

The case is now under investigation under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. - June 20, 2025
