POLICE have confirmed that the individual seen attempting to remove the ignition key from a motorcycle ridden by two teenagers in a viral video was a police officer carrying out his official duties.

Deputy Mersing District Police Chief, Deputy Superintendent Mohd Hasrudi Mohd Zain, said the incident took place near a traffic light close to Sekolah Kebangsaan Bandar Endau, Mersing.

“The officer involved was attempting to inspect a motorcycle ridden by two males believed to be school students. The motorcycle had no number plate, appeared to be modified, and was emitting excessive exhaust noise,” he explained in a statement on Sunday.

He added that the officer was on duty at the time and acted in accordance with relevant traffic laws.

“The inspection was conducted under Section 58(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 and Section 24(1)(b) of the Police Act 1967,” he said.

The police have also urged the public not to speculate on the incident, which has sparked debate on social media.
