MAJOR General Datuk Johnny Lim Eng Seng has become the first Chinese officer in Malaysian history to be promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General, marking a significant milestone in the Malaysian Armed Forces’ (MAF) efforts to promote inclusivity and meritocracy.

The MAF, in a statement on Tuesday, confirmed that the promotion ceremony was officiated by Chief of Defence Force General Tan Sri Mohd Nizam Jaffar, in the presence of all service chiefs.

Born in Melaka, Bernama cited, Lim received his early education at St Francis Primary and Secondary Schools between 1973 and 1983. He later joined the Officer Cadet Training Programme under the 25th Regular Commissioning Course and completed his military training at the prestigious Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the United Kingdom, before being commissioned into the Royal Ranger Regiment.

“The promotion reflects the MAF’s commitment to the principles of meritocracy and inclusiveness in recruitment and career development,” the statement read.

“It is also hoped that this will encourage greater participation from all ethnic groups in military careers, making the MAF a leading example of the ‘Unity in Diversity’ concept and national unity,” it added.

Lieutenant General Lim’s advancement is seen as both a professional and symbolic achievement, underscoring the evolving diversity within Malaysia’s military leadership. - June 24, 2025
