A SPECIAL one-day sitting of the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly scheduled for 7 July may see electoral boundary redelineation issues brought to the floor, although no formal motions have been filed as yet.

Speaker of the Assembly, Tan Sri Mohamad Asfia Awang Nassar, confirmed that the sitting had been called at the request of Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg, but said the Premier had not specified the subject matter to be raised.

“The Premier has requested for the one-day special sitting. He did not specify what issues he wants to raise,” Asfia said during a press conference in Kuching.

When asked whether the matter of increasing the number of constituencies in Sarawak would be discussed, the Speaker noted, “I cannot preclude that possibility, even though it is under the jurisdiction of the Election Commission.”

He added that no Bills or motions had been tabled thus far, but a notice summoning all 82 members of the assembly to attend the sitting has already been issued.

Sarawak currently has 31 parliamentary and 82 state constituencies. Any move to increase its electoral representation would require engagement with the Election Commission and approval through parliamentary processes at the federal level.

The sudden decision to convene the assembly has sparked speculation of possible legislative or administrative announcements of significance. - June 25, 2025
