A 57-YEAR-old engineer has lost RM275,000 after falling victim to an online investment scam promoted through a Facebook advertisement, the Kedah police confirmed today.

According to Kedah Commercial Crime Investigation Department (JSJK) chief Superintendent Loi Yew Lik, the victim responded to the investment offer after seeing the advertisement on 20 April.

“The victim clicked on the link provided and was added to a WhatsApp group where he communicated with several individuals using two different phone numbers,” said Loi in a statement.

The scheme promised a 10 percent return within a few days. Persuaded by the potential profits, the victim made eight transactions amounting to RM275,000 into two different company accounts between 27 May and 13 June.

Loi added, “After transferring the money, the victim received no returns. The scammers then requested additional payments under the pretext of releasing his promised profit and initial capital.”

Becoming suspicious, the engineer realised he had been defrauded and lodged a police report at the Baling District Police Headquarters yesterday.

Loi urged the public to exercise caution when approached with online investment offers and to verify the legitimacy of any financial scheme with the relevant authorities before making transactions. - June 29, 2025
