A 44-YEAR-old lecturer has lost RM294,000 after falling victim to a phone scam in which suspects posed as officers from an e-commerce platform and the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM).

Pahang police chief Datuk Seri Yahaya Othman said the victim received a phone call on 30 April from an individual claiming to represent an e-commerce company, alleging that the victim’s phone number had been used in fraudulent activity.

“The call was then transferred to another person posing as a police officer, who accused the victim of being involved in document forgery and money laundering,” he said in a statement on Monday.

The suspects allegedly threatened the man with imprisonment and caning, causing him to panic. Over a period of time, he made 17 transactions to 11 different bank accounts, totalling RM294,000.

“The transactions were conducted through online banking and cash deposit machines (CDM),” said Yahaya.

The suspects reportedly instructed the victim to ‘report’ five times a day via phone calls, WhatsApp messages, and video calls.

The funds used were drawn from the victim’s savings and bank loans. The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.

In light of the incident, Yahaya urged the public to verify any suspicious calls with the police or relevant government agencies before taking further action.

“The public is also reminded to check phone numbers and bank account details through the official link [https://semakmule.rmp.gov.my](https://semakmule.rmp.gov.my) before making any transactions,” he added. - July 1, 2025
