EXPRESS and tour bus passengers are being encouraged to report faulty or malfunctioning seat belts directly to the Road Transport Department (JPJ) via the MyJPJ mobile application, following the enforcement of mandatory seat belt use for all bus passengers from 1 July.

Kuala Lumpur JPJ director Hamidi Adam said passengers can lodge complaints with photographic or video evidence, as well as details of the bus journey, to facilitate follow-up investigations. Reports may also be submitted via email.

“It is the responsibility of bus drivers to remind their passengers to fasten their seat belts before the journey begins,” he said during a press conference at a special enforcement operation targeting express and tour buses at the Gombak Toll Plaza on Wednesday night.

“This initiative aims to improve public transport safety and reduce the risk of severe injury or death in the event of an accident involving express buses,” he added.

During the operation, JPJ officers inspected 41 express buses and three tour buses between 8pm and midnight. A total of 23 express bus passengers — including 20 Malaysians and three foreigners — were issued compounds for failing to wear seat belts.

Hamidi noted that most of the passengers claimed they were unaware of the legal requirement to wear seat belts while travelling on a bus.

Notices were also issued to two express bus drivers — one for driving in the right lane, and another for operating a vehicle with a non-functioning emergency door.

Hamidi stressed that ensuring safety in public transport is a collective responsibility.

“Compliance with the law is not merely a regulatory obligation but a reflection of our commitment to valuing human life,” he said.

“All parties, whether passengers, operators, or enforcement personnel, must work together to build a transport system that is safe, disciplined, and accountable.” - July 3, 2025
