AN express bus collided with an overhead height restriction barrier late Friday night after the driver reportedly relied solely on a navigation app, failing to notice the physical warning structure on Jalan Mutiara, Putra Mahkota.
Kajang District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Mohd Zaid Hassan, said the incident occurred at approximately 11.25pm, when the 62-year-old driver was en route from Kuantan to destinations in Negeri Sembilan and Melaka, with 21 passengers on board.
“Initial investigations indicate the accident happened near the Nilai border in Negeri Sembilan. The driver was believed to have used a navigation application, unaware of a metal height barrier along the route,” he said in a statement on Saturday.
He added, “The bus struck the barrier, becoming lodged under it. The impact caused significant damage to the front and roof sections of the vehicle.”
The total number of occupants, including the driver, was 22—comprising 19 adults and three children. Seven individuals, including the driver, sustained injuries—three women and four men—and were transported to Hospital Serdang and Hospital Tuanku Ja’afar in Seremban for further treatment.
“Passengers who were unharmed were collected by family members at the scene and returned safely to their respective destinations,” said Mohd Zaid.
The case is being investigated under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for careless and inconsiderate driving.
Authorities are urging anyone with information to contact Investigating Officer Inspector Narolhisyam Endi at 012-5897115 to assist in the investigation.
