PRIME MINISTER Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim met with his Indian counterpart, Narendra Modi, on the sidelines of the 17th BRICS Summit on Sunday to discuss efforts to broaden the strategic partnership between Malaysia and India.

According to a statement released by Anwar, both leaders explored substantial opportunities to strengthen bilateral ties across key sectors, including trade, investment, digital technology and defence.

“I also welcomed the interest shown by Indian companies in investing in Malaysia’s future-focused sectors, such as the digital economy, artificial intelligence (AI), renewable energy and the aerospace industry,” Anwar said.

Both countries reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing people-to-people ties through collaboration in cultural, tourism and education sectors. This includes the proposal to establish a campus of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Malaysia.

During the meeting, Malaysia and India also emphasised the importance of ensuring regional peace and stability, while expressing support for fair and peaceful resolutions to global issues, including the situations in Palestine and Jammu-Kashmir.

Anwar added that Malaysia welcomes efforts to strengthen ASEAN–India relations ahead of the ASEAN–India Summit scheduled for October, in line with a shared commitment to mutually beneficial regional cooperation.

“May the close ties between Malaysia and India continue to flourish for the mutual benefit and well-being of both our peoples,” he said. - July 7, 2025
