PAS has proposed the creation of a Presidential Council within Perikatan Nasional (PN), consisting of the presidents of all component parties in the coalition, as part of efforts to strengthen its leadership and organisational structure.
The suggestion was disclosed by PAS central committee member Khairil Nizam Khirudin, who confirmed that the idea has already been conveyed to the leadership of Bersatu.
“The proposal has reached Bersatu, and we’ve asked them to consider it, as it requires a consensus among all parties within PN,” he said.
“We propose the formation of a highest-level body, to be called the Presidential Council, which will be made up of party presidents and will oversee PN from a holistic standpoint.”
Khairil Nizam explained that the day-to-day running of the coalition — including issue response and grassroots mobilisation — would remain under the remit of the PN executive committee.
He was responding to questions about whether PAS has discussed its role within PN, including the suggestion of a rotational chairmanship for the coalition, which is currently led by Bersatu president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
Muhyiddin recently stated that he continues to uphold the coalition’s internal consensus, particularly the stance of PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang, who supports his continued leadership.
Khairil Nizam, who is also the Member of Parliament for Jerantut, said the Presidential Council proposal would likely be deliberated further at the next PN leadership meeting.
“We’ll see how discussions develop moving forward,” he added.
PAS has also rejected recent claims of discord among PN component parties, following speculation over internal tensions.
Media reports have previously indicated that PN is expected to undertake a major restructuring of its organisational framework to improve governance and cohesion.
PAS deputy president Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man had earlier said these improvements would likely follow the completion of a full review by PN’s special committee. - July 10, 2025
