A DISABLED Malaysian doctor has made history after being selected to serve on the official medical team caring for pilgrims in the holy cities of Mecca and Medina.

Dr Fatimah Sabrina Mohammad, a PhD student at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), is the first Malaysian woman with disabilities to be appointed to the Tabung Haji health delegation. Her selection marks a milestone in the country’s growing commitment to inclusion in public service.

Currently pursuing her doctorate in public health while serving as a medical officer with the Sabah State Health Department, Dr Sabrina supported Malaysian pilgrims for several months in one of the most challenging healthcare deployments abroad.

Her work took place in extreme heat and demanding conditions. She assisted elderly and ill pilgrims, responded to medical emergencies, and coordinated patient care alongside other members of the Tabung Haji medical team.

Colleagues described her as a figure of quiet strength and relentless dedication.

“Although she walks with a limp, she always arrived early, never once complained about her duties, and kept going even when visibly exhausted,” said one teammate. “She wasn’t just part of the team. She was an inspiration.”

Universiti Malaysia Sabah, where Dr Sabrina is currently enrolled, also expressed pride in her achievement, calling it the result of inclusive education and continued support for students with special needs.

“The name of UMS is now recognised globally not only through research and academia but through the human values and service of our students,” said a senior university official.

Dr Sabrina’s role in the Hajj medical mission is now seen as a symbol of what inclusion in national service can look like. It is proof that ability should never be measured solely by physical capacity but by contribution, commitment, and courage. - July 11, 2025
