PRIME MINISTER Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has urged members of Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) to embrace the principle of islah mastata’tum – striving for change with all available means – as the party continues its reform journey.
Speaking after a meeting with PKR Wilayah Persekutuan in Putrajaya on Sunday, Anwar, who also serves as PKR president, reminded members that meaningful reform must be gradual and rooted in integrity.
"We cannot accomplish everything overnight, but we will continue to push forward with reforms, step by step," he stated in a Facebook post.
He added that while Wilayah Persekutuan has historically been a stronghold for PKR, the party’s true strength lies in its values and its grassroots engagement.
"Divisions must remain active with programmes that genuinely serve the people, regardless of race, age or background," he said.
Anwar, who is also the Minister of Finance, stressed the importance of constructive criticism and internal reflection within the party.
"I thank all who gathered yesterday for a peaceful assembly. I am always open to criticism, though I regret that no substantive issues were raised. The only message was: ‘Step down, Anwar’."
He also addressed opposition plans for a vote of no confidence: "The opposition leader is said to be preparing such a motion. By all means. This is a democracy. If they have the numbers, bring it to Parliament."
The Prime Minister reiterated that the Madani Government does not claim perfection and remains open to correcting weaknesses.
"What is lacking, we will improve. What remains unresolved, we will address. Reform must be phased to ensure it is accepted, understood, and sustainable," said Anwar.
He also pointed to recent policy decisions aimed at easing the cost of living without compromising economic stability.
"We reduced the price of RON95 petrol to RM1.99 for Malaysians by removing subsidies for foreigners," he said.
"Ultimately, PKR must remain a party of the future – open to critique, mature in its actions, and united in purpose. We are not perfect, but we are honest. As long as we have sincerity and a desire to improve, we will continue to advance beyond those who only shout without offering direction or solutions."
Thailand -Cambodia Ceasefire Mediation
Separately, Anwar announced that he would chair ceasefire talks in Putrajaya on Monday between Thai and Cambodian representatives, aimed at de-escalating a growing conflict along the two countries' shared border.
"Their representatives have asked me to mediate a peaceful solution, so we will host the meeting here tomorrow at 3 p.m.," he said during a Madani knowledge forum on Sunday night.
He confirmed that discussions would cover ceasefire terms and conditions proposed by both sides.
The talks follow appeals for de-escalation from international powers, including former US President Donald Trump and the Chinese government.
A Malaysian-led team, possibly joined by neighbouring nations, will monitor the process to ensure compliance.
"We are doing our utmost, and I am thankful for the trust placed in us. They are close friends, our neighbours, and we work together," Anwar said. "I hope this succeeds. We must keep trying to align all parameters. Our Foreign Minister and the Ministry are working around the clock to ensure clarity – it’s not easy when shots are still being fired, and M16s are in use."
"Even though this is not as severe as conflicts elsewhere, we must act. I’ve always been proud that ASEAN remains the most peaceful region in the world, and one of the fastest growing economies."
The Thai government had earlier confirmed its attendance at the regional peace talks in Malaysia, aimed at finding a data-driven and peaceful resolution to the worsening border tensions with Cambodia.
Thai government spokesperson Jirayu Huangsap stated that the discussions would focus on informed proposals to help restore peace. - July 28, 2025
