POLICE will be contacting the Indonesian Embassy in efforts to locate the biological mother of a seven-month-old baby girl who died from suspected prolonged abuse in a flat in Bandar Sri Permaisuri, Cheras, last Thursday.

Acting Kuala Lumpur Police Chief, Datuk Mohamed Usuf Jan Mohamad, said the move was part of an ongoing investigation to confirm the mother's identity and inform her of the infant's death.

"Further checks revealed the baby had been left in the care of a married couple who were undocumented. So far, we have recorded statements from seven individuals, including neighbours," he said at the Kuala Lumpur Police Contingent Headquarters on Monday.

"The couple remains in remand. Once the investigation paper is completed, it will be submitted to the Attorney General’s Chambers for further action," he added.

On Sunday, police confirmed that the baby’s injuries and death resulted from continuous abuse over the past month. Investigators believe the infant's prolonged crying caused the adoptive mother severe stress, which allegedly led to the mistreatment.

A post-mortem examination revealed the baby had suffered a skull fracture.

The couple, aged 38 and 50, were arrested on 30 July after the baby was found unconscious and turning blue in their living room, with bruises visible on her body. Police received a report at 9.34pm that day from a man claiming his adopted child had suddenly become unresponsive without an apparent cause.

The case is being investigated under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, which provides for a maximum penalty of 20 years' imprisonment, a fine of up to RM50,000, or both, upon conviction.

It was also confirmed that the adoptive mother tested positive for drugs.

Initial investigations suggest the baby had been in the care of the suspects since 18 June, after her biological mother reportedly returned to Indonesia. - August 4, 2025
