MALAYSIA’S artificial intelligence (AI) sector has drawn RM3.29 billion in approved investments in the first half of 2025, with the potential to create 6,920 new jobs under the Malaysia Digital initiative, according to Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo.

“This marks progress by the National AI Office (NAIO) in developing the country’s AI ecosystem,” said Gobind during a session in the Dewan Rakyat, responding to a query from Datuk Dr Ku Abd Rahman Ku Ismail (PN–Kubang Pasu) on the status of the NAIO.

The minister also announced that the ASEAN Digital Summit 2025 will take place from 11 to 13 August, underscoring efforts to elevate Malaysia’s role in the regional digital economy.

Addressing cross-sectoral collaboration, Gobind revealed that an AI impact study involving 28 ministries is nearing completion. The study has so far identified 55 use cases for AI in government operations.

“These include AI-powered traffic forecasting, smart port management, radiology and hospital resource management, digitisation of medical records, agricultural supply-demand forecasting, pest detection systems, and workforce upskilling programmes,” he said.

He added that the forthcoming “AI at Work” programme will further enhance the efficiency of public sector functions.

“This is important to realise our national transformation from social, economic and governance perspectives,” Gobind stated. - August 11, 2025
