THE Attorney General’s Chambers has no plans to prosecute any further individuals in connection with the death of Form One student Zara Qairina Mahathir until the ongoing inquest at the Kota Kinabalu Coroner’s Court is completed.
Attorney General Tan Sri Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar said, to date, only five female students have been charged in relation to the case.
“At this stage, there are no proposals to bring charges against any additional suspects until the inquest proceedings have concluded.
“Once the proceedings are complete, we will review the findings and act accordingly based on the coroner’s determination.
“Right now, a forensic pathologist is giving evidence as scheduled during the inquest,” he told reporters following the handover ceremony of public infrastructure under the Attorney General’s Department’s Kampung Angkat Madani Programme 2025, held here today.
The case has drawn nationwide attention after the five teenagers were charged in the Juvenile Court last month with using offensive language against Zara Qairina. The proceedings were held behind closed doors before Sessions Court Judge Elsie Primus.
The inquest to determine the cause of Zara’s death began on 3 September at the Kota Kinabalu Coroner’s Court. Spanning 19 days, it is scheduled to run on 3–4 September, 8–12 September, 17–19 September, and 22–30 September.
The inquest is being presided over by Sessions Court Judge Amir Shah Amir Hassan, sitting as coroner.
