THE Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has unveiled the Strategic Communications and Multimedia Technology Roadmap 2025–2030 (MyTMAP2030), positioning it as Malaysia’s national blueprint for accelerating digital advancement and innovation over the next five years.
The launch took place during the ITU–MCMC Bridging the Standardisation Gap (BSG) Workshop on AI Standards and Governance, held in Kuala Lumpur from 9 to 12 September 2025.
“MyTMAP2030 aims to harness emerging technologies, drive innovation, and accelerate nationwide digital adoption,” MCMC said in a statement.
“AI standards and governance are the foundations of trust, cooperation and inclusivity in our digital future. Through this workshop and the launch of MyTMAP2030, Malaysia reaffirms its commitment to building responsible, ethical and impactful AI for the region and beyond.”
The ITU–MCMC BSG Workshop brought together policymakers, regulators, industry leaders and technical experts from across the Asia-Pacific to strengthen collaboration on artificial intelligence standards, governance frameworks and regional digital transformation.
A high-level panel discussion on AI Standards and Governance opened the workshop, featuring representatives from the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the Department of Standards Malaysia, and key figures from the technology industry. The panel provided insights into the evolving AI landscape, the role of standardisation, and emerging best practices in governance.
Participants engaged in a range of capacity-building sessions focused on ITU’s work in AI-related standards, the global standardisation process and the goals of the BSG programme. These sessions were complemented by case studies and an Innovation Café, offering practical insights into how AI can support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
Director of the ITU Telecommunication Standardisation Bureau, Seizo Onoe, emphasised the importance of international standards in supporting innovation.
“ITU standards help the world to keep innovating and investing in digital development. We nurture expertise and capacity for everyone to realise this value with our Bridging the Standardisation Gap programme and initiatives like our AI Skills Coalition. I thank Malaysia for its commitment to this goal at home and across Asia and the Pacific,” he said.
Dr Cosmas Luckyson Zavazava, Director of the ITU Telecommunication Development Bureau, echoed the sentiment, highlighting the importance of regional cooperation.
“This collaboration reflects ITU’s commitment to supporting countries in the Asia-Pacific region in strengthening their capacity in artificial intelligence and standards, bridging the standardisation gap and fostering inclusive digital ecosystems. We are grateful to the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications of Japan for their generous support and the commitment from our regional partners, including MCMC. This workshop will go a long way in ensuring that the benefits of AI are widely shared, helping to strengthen the telecommunications and ICT sectors across the Asia-Pacific,” he said.
MCMC reiterated its support for continued collaborative development in artificial intelligence and emerging technologies, as Malaysia positions itself at the forefront of digital innovation and governance in the region. - September 12, 2025
