PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang has ruled himself out as a candidate for prime minister should Perikatan Nasional (PN) form the next federal government, citing age and health concerns.
“People like me are no longer suitable,” New Straits Times cited him saying during a press conference following the opening of Pas’ 71st Muktamar. “My health is not what it used to be, and the prime minister should ideally be under 70.”
Hadi, who is 77, emphasised that leadership is a great responsibility in Islam, warning that failing to fulfil it justly could lead to divine punishment.
“If it is fulfilled properly, it brings God’s reward. If not, one can be condemned to hell. That is why many fear the role of a leader,” he said.
He added that any prime ministerial candidate must meet the criteria of knowledge, integrity, and capability, and must govern with the support of a cabinet that includes both politicians and technocrats.
“The cabinet must reflect all communities in Malaysia to ensure that governance truly represents the people,” he said.
His remarks come amid mounting pressure from within Pas for the party to lead the PN coalition and name its own candidate for the top post. Pas spiritual leader Datuk Hashim Jasin recently voiced support for Pas Youth’s call to take the helm, saying the coalition needs someone who can lead with humility, righteousness and sincerity.
While Hadi has stepped aside, Vice-President Datuk Seri Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah has indicated openness to the role. However, Deputy President Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man has already ruled himself out.
In his keynote address at the Muktamar, Hadi also affirmed that Pas is ready to lead a multiracial Malaysia while upholding the Federal Constitution and the rights of all communities.
“Islam can unite a plural society in harmony and safety,” he said. “This is the commitment that Pas pledges to non-Muslims.”
He stressed that Islam obliges leaders to govern fairly for all and permits other religious communities to practise their faiths freely, while requiring Muslims to respect their sensitivities.
“Pas chooses democracy despite its flaws and misuses. The strength of dakwah lies in truth and reasoned arguments,” he added.
Hadi said Pas’ governance in states under its control has gained recognition, even from its opponents, particularly in its handling of corruption and misconduct.
He also acknowledged former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s declaration that “Islam is the solution”, citing his experience during past economic crises.
“In the 15th General Election, Pas recorded its biggest victory since its founding, securing four states and winning the highest number of parliamentary seats,” Hadi said. “With this comes the greater challenge of managing victory than simply achieving it.”
Meanwhile, PN chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, who attended the Muktamar as guest of honour, later told reporters that Pas has every right to propose its intention to lead the coalition and nominate a prime ministerial candidate.
“This will be discussed and decided by the PN Presidential Council,” he said. “Each party makes announcements at their own assemblies. I’ve informed Tan Sri Hadi that we will call a supreme council meeting to discuss this, likely within the next week.”
Muhyiddin dismissed speculation of a rift between Pas and Bersatu, saying ties between the two parties remain strong. - September 15, 2025
