ILLEGAL gambling syndicates operating in Kuantan have been found disguising their activities behind seemingly legitimate business fronts, including convenience stores and mobile phone repair shops.
The ruse was uncovered through a series of police raids on ten premises across the district, including in Semambu, carried out since the beginning of the year.
Deputy District Police Chief Superintendent Mohd Adli Mat Daud said the establishments were primarily offering online gambling services and unlicensed lottery betting.
“All the premises have been acted upon, with ten individuals, including caretakers and employees, charged in court,” he said during an electricity disconnection operation conducted under Ops Mega with Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) on Thursday.
The disconnection of power supply was executed under Section 21A of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953 to prevent any resumption of illegal activities once legal proceedings have concluded.
Mohd Adli added that efforts to eradicate gambling and other illicit activities in the district will be intensified.
“We have identified several other locations suspected of harbouring gambling operations behind legitimate commercial facades,” he said, warning that anyone caught involved will face stern action regardless of their background.
He urged members of the public, especially young people, to stay away from gambling, citing the potentially devastating impact on their financial, social, and personal wellbeing.
“The public is encouraged to report any suspected gambling activity in their area directly to the police for immediate action,” he added. - September 25, 2025
