UMNO calls for special parliamentary committee review for Urban Redevelopment Bill 2025
Bill slated for its second reading next week in the Dewan Rakyat - October 3, 2025

UMNO has proposed that the Urban Redevelopment Bill (RUU Pembangunan Semula Bandar) 2025, scheduled for a second reading in the Dewan Rakyat next week, be referred to a special parliamentary committee for further review and refinement.

UMNO Vice-President Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani explained that this move aims to improve the bill by making it more comprehensive through incorporating feedback and criticism from various segments of society.

While UMNO does not oppose the concept of urban redevelopment, Johari stressed that the process must be orderly and well-coordinated, without disregarding the interests of all stakeholders involved.

“Yes, we want the Urban Redevelopment Bill 2025 referred to a special parliamentary committee before it is passed in the Dewan Rakyat. We have gathered various findings following the Urban Redevelopment Convention,” he said.

Johari added that these findings will be discussed with UMNO President and Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to explore how public concerns might be better integrated into the legislation.

“As members of the ruling coalition, we must avoid internal conflicts. I am also a minister, so we will take the bill to the President, who will then communicate with the Prime Minister,” he said during a press conference at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur. - October 3, 2025
