KUALA LUMPUR – About a week after raids on Brightway Holdings Sdn Bhd’s two subsidiaries, the three entities will be slapped with 30 charges for various offences under the Workers’ Minimum Standards of Housing and Amenities Act 1990 (Act 446), said the Human Resources Ministry.
In a statement today, the ministry said 22 charges will be levelled at glove-maker Brightway Holdings and its subsidiary Biopro (M) Sdn Bhd under Act 446 while La Glove (M) Sdn Bhd will face eight accusations.
Each offence carries up to a RM50,000 fine. If found guilty on all charges, the companies are facing a total of up to a RM1.5 million fine.
Once investigation papers are completed, they will be handed to the deputy public prosecutors.
Authorities raided Biopro on December 24 and La Glove in Kajang on December 21.
“Among the offences are failure by the employer to receive a Certificate for Accommodation from the Labour director-general, facilities that did not fulfil a minimum standard for accommodation as specified under Act 446.”
Minister Datuk Seri M. Saravanan had described the accommodation conditions at La Glove as “modern slavery” and “one of the worst he had seen”.
Meanwhile, authorities during the raid on Biopro uncovered that its workers had been moved to another location. – The vibes, December 27, 2020
