A WOMAN in Tangkak and a contractor in Pontian were separately defrauded of RM65,100 and RM231,200 in scams involving impersonation of enforcement officers and bogus government tender offers.

Two individuals in Johor have suffered combined losses of nearly RM300,000 in separate commercial crime cases involving sophisticated deception tactics, police confirmed today.

In Tangkak, a 39-year-old woman lost RM65,100 after being duped by fraudsters posing as officers from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and the Royal Malaysia Police.

Tangkak police chief Superintendent Roslan Mohd Talib said the victim lodged a report on 15 October, alleging she had received a phone call from someone claiming to be from the MCMC.

"The victim was informed that she was allegedly involved in online fraud and money laundering cases. She was then instructed to transfer money from her own bank account into several others, supposedly for investigation purposes," Roslan said in a statement.

Acting on the instructions, the woman made 13 separate cash transfers into two bank accounts, now believed to be mule accounts used by the syndicate. The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating and dishonestly inducing the delivery of property.

Meanwhile, in Pontian, a 46-year-old contractor was conned out of RM231,200 after being lured by a man claiming to offer a non-existent government tender.

Pontian district police chief Superintendent Mohammad Shofee Tayib said the victim had been led to believe he was securing contracts to supply sewing machines and souvenir sets for an official event said to involve VIP attendees.

“Drawn in by the opportunity, the victim made several online transfers to multiple personal accounts provided by the suspect on 13 and 14 October, totalling RM231,200,” Shofee stated.

However, upon verifying the claim with the relevant government department, the victim was informed that no such programme was scheduled to take place.

The case is also being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code, which carries a penalty of imprisonment for not less than one year and up to ten years, along with whipping and a possible fine.

Mohammad Shofee advised the public to stay informed of prevailing commercial crime tactics to avoid falling victim to fraud.

“If you suspect you have been scammed, contact the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC) immediately via the 997 hotline. Early action is critical to blocking the outflow of funds from the suspect’s accounts,” he added. - October 16, 2025
