THE Penang branch of the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) has destroyed 81,049 units of counterfeit branded goods valued at more than RM4.76 million, following the completion of legal proceedings and compound fines for the year.
State KPDN Director S Jegan said the items, seized through enforcement operations and inspections, included clothing, bags, women’s accessories, vehicle spare parts, food and healthcare products, as well as electronic devices and accessories.
“These seizures involved offences under the Control of Supplies Act 1961, Trade Descriptions Act 2011, Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011, Trade Marks Act 2019, and Consumer Protection Act 1999, carried out from January to October.
“Disposal action was taken after the conclusion of prosecution and compounding processes,” he said at a media briefing during the KPDN Mega Exhibit Disposal Programme in Bukit Minyak today.
Jegan added that between 1 January and 30 October, authorities inspected 65,790 premises, resulting in 793 enforcement actions with total seizures valued at over RM3.051 million.
Of these, 625 cases were compounded for a total of RM439,000, while two cases were brought to court, each resulting in fines of RM16,000.
He noted that 167 cases involving seized goods were either disposed of or forfeited to the Malaysian government, generating provisional revenue of RM382,427.
This included sales from tendered seized items worth RM20,100, controlled goods sales exceeding RM1.73 million, and the destruction of evidence items valued at over RM2.62 million.
Individuals and syndicates have been warned to cease illegal activities involving smuggling, counterfeit goods, and violations of controlled items.
Jegan also advised consumers to exercise caution when making daily purchases, particularly online, to avoid falling victim to fraudulent schemes. - October 30, 2025
