MALAYSIA is targeting a place among the world’s top 20 nations in the Global Innovation Index (GII) through the implementation of a dedicated strategy involving stronger cross-agency coordination, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said.
He emphasised that the goal is crucial to strengthening Malaysia’s competitiveness as a high-technology economy, in line with the aspirations of the Malaysia MADANI vision by 2030.
Anwar said the National Science Council meeting he chaired on Wednesday also focused on improving the funding framework for Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) to ensure more efficient and high-impact delivery.
“This index serves as a guide for the government, industry and policymakers in making strategic decisions to ensure Malaysia emerges as a high-technology nation founded on MADANI values by 2030,” he said in a Facebook post.
The Prime Minister added that public–private collaboration remains a key catalyst for the country’s innovation development, consistent with the National STI Policy 2021–2030, which seeks to transform Malaysia into a technology-developing nation.
At the same time, Anwar underscored the importance of mission-oriented coordination in research and development (R&D) activities to prevent fragmented efforts. - November 6, 2025
