PRIME MINISTER Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called for a broader understanding of zakat, describing it as a cornerstone for social justice and a vital tool in addressing extreme poverty in Malaysia.
“Sometimes we consider zakat only as a routine act of worship, but we forget that this country must stand on the strength of zakat institutions and economic policies that uplift those who are marginalised and left behind,” he said during the launch of the Masjid Madani Permatang Pauh development in Seberang Perai Tengah on Saturday.
Anwar highlighted that the responsibility to pay zakat extends beyond piety to encompass human relations, elevating the dignity of those in need. “In the Madani economic framework, the issue of hardcore poverty cannot be allowed to persist. Every year, there must be measurable progress, and the numbers must continue to decline,” he said.
He also recalled that during the caliphate of Abu Bakar as-Siddiq RA, zakat was so crucial that those refusing to pay it were confronted with military action. “That spirit should serve as a foundation today, ensuring zakat functions not just as an individual duty, but as a social system that comprehensively protects the poor,” Anwar added.
At the same event, Anwar officially launched the Masjid Madani Permatang Pauh project, which will occupy a 2.23-hectare site in Taman Arowana adjacent to the North-South Expressway.
The mosque, expected to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2027, is designed to accommodate 5,249 worshippers and includes facilities such as an air-conditioned multipurpose hall, library, lecture rooms, guest and funeral rooms, administration offices, six staff quarters, and extensive parking for cars and motorcycles.
“The construction cost of RM75 million will not use government funds, relying instead on contributions from local Islamic companies and Muslim friends abroad. RM42 million is from overseas donors — I will name them once they permit.
The remaining RM30 million is domestic, with minimal government contribution only if necessary,” he said.
Anwar emphasised that the construction must proceed swiftly and without compromise. “I want all approvals obtained immediately. Prompt action, swift development.
“I will not tolerate any deficiencies or delays in building this Grand Masjid, the Masjid Madani in Permatang Pauh. May Allah bless our efforts,” he said.
The mosque’s design, covering over 110,000 square feet, reflects collaboration between local and international architects, aiming to create a modern Islamic community complex that not only serves as a place of worship but also promotes the values and outreach of Islam in line with Malaysia Madani principles. - November 8, 2025
