RESIDENTS of Kampung Sungai Baru can finally breathe a sigh of relief as the groundbreaking ceremony for the village’s long-awaited redevelopment was officiated today. The event marks a pivotal moment in the transformation of the area.

According to the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories), Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa, the ceremony represents a historic milestone.

“Alhamdulillah, today is the most historic day, a moment we have awaited for almost 10 years. This ceremony signifies our intent to bring the original residents back to Kampung Sungai Baru,” she said.

She emphasised the importance of preserving the community’s heritage.

“In this endeavour, I have requested that the Kampong Bharu Development Corporation (PKB) carefully examine all aspects to ensure that the original identity is preserved—not only the Malay identity but also the local customs of Kampung Sungai Baru. This is not the end for Kampung Sungai Baru; it is, in fact, a new beginning,” she added.

Dr Zaliha also revealed that the developer has committed to several measures to ensure residents’ comfort.

“The developer has agreed to provide maintenance fees free of charge for the first year upon completion of the redevelopment, and to cover 70 per cent of the maintenance costs from the second year through to the tenth year, with a commitment totalling RM4 million.

“Additionally, the developer will provide extra home fittings, including air conditioning, canopies, and cooking facilities, valued at RM2 million.

“The developer has also agreed to bear construction costs of RM15 million to establish direct access between Kampung Baru generally, and Kampung Sungai Baru in particular, to the Ampang-Kuala Lumpur Elevated Highway (AKLEH),” she explained.

The redevelopment project will feature several condominium units with comprehensive facilities aimed at enhancing residents’ quality of life.

Two types of residential units are planned, ranging from 900 to 1,200 square feet, each comprising three bedrooms and three bathrooms. - November 30, 2025
