A TOTAL of 3,135 flood victims remain housed at 49 temporary relief centres (PPS) across seven states as of 8am today, as authorities brace for continued heavy rain and worsening sea conditions over the coming days.
According to the Social Welfare Department’s (JKM) disaster portal, Perlis continues to record the highest number of active centres with 15 PPS still operating, followed by Perak with 14, Selangor with 11 and Pahang with six. One PPS remains open in each of Kelantan, Sabah and Sarawak.
The displaced population comprises 966 men and 1,011 women, alongside 1,078 children, 83 infants, 403 senior citizens and 84 persons with disabilities.
MetMalaysia has issued a renewed alert for continuous rainfall expected in parts of Kelantan, Pahang and Terengganu from Saturday through Sunday.
A similar warning has been extended to areas in Johor and Sarawak, effective from Sunday until next Monday.
Thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds are forecast to persist over the waters off Perlis, Kedah, Penang, Perak, Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka, western Johor, Terengganu, Sarawak and Sabah until 10am today.
Conditions are also expected to affect the eastern maritime zones of Phuket and Samui in Thailand, the Malacca Strait, northern Tioman, Condore, Bunguran, Reef North and South, Layang-Layang, Labuan, Sulu and Sulawesi.
MetMalaysia warned that these conditions may bring winds of up to 50kph and waves as high as 3.5 metres, posing a serious risk to small vessels.
“This situation may cause strong winds of up to 50 kilometres per hour and rough seas with waves reaching heights of up to 3.5 metres, dangerous for small boats,” the department said.
A Category III Strong Wind and Rough Sea warning is also in force for the northeastern waters of Condore and the northwestern part of Reef North, where winds exceeding 60kph and waves above 4.5 metres are expected until next Monday.
“Strong winds and rough seas are hazardous for all coastal and shipping activities, including offshore workers,” MetMalaysia cautioned.
Category II warnings have been issued for the northwest and southeast waters of Condore, northeast and southwest Reef North, and Layang-Layang, with winds of 50 to 60kph and waves approaching 4.5 metres.
These conditions are deemed dangerous for all maritime and coastal activity, including ferries and fishing vessels.
Meanwhile, a Category I warning covers the eastern waters of Johor, southeast Samui, Pahang, Terengganu, Kelantan, Tioman, southwest Condore, northern Bunguran, southeast Reef North, Reef South, Labuan, Palawan and Sulu. Winds of 40 to 50kph and waves of up to 3.5 metres are expected, posing risks to small craft, recreational boating and water sports.
Authorities continue to urge the public to remain vigilant, monitor official advisories and avoid high-risk areas as the monsoon weather persists. - December 5, 2025
